What is the bonus in basketball?

In basketball, a bonus is a situation in which a team has committed a certain number of team fouls in a specified period (usually a quarter or half). Once a team reaches the bonus, their opponent is awarded free throw attempts for each subsequent foul committed by the penalized team.

There are two types of bonus situations in basketball:

  1. The team foul bonus: This occurs when a team has committed a certain number of fouls in a period (usually 4 or 5) and any subsequent fouls will result in free throw attempts for the opposing team. The team foul bonus resets at the start of each period.

  2. The double bonus: This occurs when a team has committed a certain number of fouls in a period (usually 9 or 10) and any subsequent fouls will result in two free throw attempts for the opposing team. The double bonus also resets at the start of each period.

The bonus can have a significant impact on the outcome of a game, as free throws are typically easier to make than field goals and can swing the momentum in favor of the team shooting them. Teams in the bonus will need to be more cautious in defending without fouling to avoid giving their opponents easy points from the free throw line.
